Symmetrics comes close at US Air Force Cycling Classic May 5, 2008 The S Team wrapped up their recent two week road trip with the US Air Force Cycling Classic in Crystal City, VA on May 4. Following a very successful Tour de Georgia, the squad first traveled to South Carolina for a few extra days of racing at the US Speed Week criterium series. Unfortuantely, Canadian Champion Cam Evans, crashed heavily on Wednesday night at one of the races. Cam flew back to Sunnyvale, CA on Thursday and then climbed into his car to drive back to Vancouver. The team is awaiting further news on whether he has broken his collar bone. The team was down to 6 riders due to Cam's injury as well as a last minute departure by Svein Tuft to Uruguay for the Pan Am Championships where he immediately captured gold in the pursuit. So the team consisted of Eric Wohlberg, Andrew Randell, Jacob Erker, Francios Parisien, Christian Meier and Jeff Sherstobitoff. The course was a 12k loop riding past the Pentagon building. It was mostly flat with only a slight rise past the feedzone. The boys knew that a bunch sprint was a high probability but they were quite motivated to not allow it to happen. Relentless attacking whittled the field down to about 30 riders at the finish. Andrew Randell took advantage of the tiring group and attacked in the closing laps. He originally had three companions who were not motivated to work. So Randell slipped away from them and went solo on the last lap. With 5km to go, Andrew hung onto a 30 second gap but the Kelly Benefits squad was in full flight to chase him down. With one km remaining, the Colavita team took over and caught Randell with just 50m to go. Andrew hung on for 4th place while a trio of S-Team riders, Frank, Eric and Jacob came in behind in 5th, 6th and 7th. Despite being the main animator of the race, Christian still had the legs to finish 15th. "I was surprised when I reached the top of the hill on the last lap to still have 30 seconds," said Randell. "So I thought maybe I'd make it all the way, especially with the tailwind section coming up. But suddenly there was no tailwind. In the end, our results of finishing 4th through 7th, winning the most agressive rider award as well as the team classification award, we're pretty happy to have stuck around for an extra week after Georgia." Erker was also pleased with the team's ride on Sunday. "We were present in every move of the day and held our own with only 6 guys, and a few of us are trying to hold off some bronchitis too. 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th isn't too bad. We had our guys in position for the bunch sprint but of course, you have to give Randers his chance to win, so it handicaps our own leadout a bit. But we'd do it the same again. Without a sprinter for the race, we had to play our cards on going up the road. If it hadn't been Randers up the road, it would've been one of us doing the same thing". Up next for the S-Team is Mt. Hood in Oregon. This 6 day race will be great preparation for the boys before Philly Week and the Tour de Beauce in June. |
