At the age of 10 Brandon was diagnosed with a knee condition that limited his ability to play aggressive team sports like basketball and football. He was then instructed by his doctor to maybe try cycling instead, as it was less strenuous on his knee.

He quickly developed a love for Mountain Biking and soon after, began racing. Brandon always had a competitive edge, however it was the competitiveness of the Tour De L'Abitibi and the racing lifestyle that transformed him into a road cyclist. In 2003, it became clear that he would no longer be racing mountain bikes as the World Road Championships were going to be in Brandon's hometown. He did not want to be an observer at them, but rather a participant. Brandon achieved his goal and raced for Team Canada at those World Championships.

His true passion for the sport of cycling became evident after Brandon announced in 2007 that he was finished bicycle racing and would attempt other interests. While taking full-time courses at McMaster University, team owner Kevin Cunningham insisted on sending Brandon a bicycle to continue to ride at 'leisure'. Sure enough, after three months away from the bike, it became clear that life without a bicycle was simply not an option. Thanks to Kevin and the Symmetrics team, Brandon was back racing that summer. This time away from the bike allowed Brandon to see what was important in his life, and ultimately proved that cycling was here to stay!
