Born in Calgary, Alberta, Jacob credits Greg Lemond's 1989 Tour de France win as the event that roused his interest in cycling and eventually helped him locate a local Calgary cycling club in 1990. After four years of riding, a back injury sidelined Jacob until 1998. In 1999, he relocated to San Diego to ride for the Sparkletts Water team. Since then, Jacob has been a member of several different squads, including the professional teams Schroeder Iron 2001-2003 and Seasilver in 2004. Jacob's racing results include two international wins at the Tour of Guadeloupe and the Tour of Hokkaido, King of the Mountain at the Redlands Classic Stage Race, and numerous victories throughout the U.S and Canada.

In 2006, Jacob moved to Portland, Oregon with his wife, Laura and he has recently switched his coffee allegiance from Peet's Coffee to Stumptown. Although his travels have forced him to miss many fine Simpsons episodes over the last few years, Jacob is glad to have some 'old timers' like Svein and Pinfold on the team, who remember the early years. However, The Office now provides some good quote material.
