Born in Langley BC, Svein has always been an accomplished athlete. He has competed, for example, in water ski slalom and jumping competitions, football, running, and bicycle adventure touring, which eventually led to road cycling. Svein first raced in 1999, with a marked presence at the Provincial Championships. Further strong results earned Svein a spot with the Broadmark Capital team and later with the National Team. A 14th place TT finish at the Tour of Langkawi then landed him a guest contract with the Mercury professional team and, in 2002 and 2003, Svein rode with the Prime Alliance professional team. Svein took a short hiatus from cycling to hike and tour, but returned part way through the 2004 season. He's now reenergized about the sport, in part because of the Symmetrics Team and its program of developing young Canadian talent.
Off his bike, Svein can be found hiking, running, weight training and freestyle wrestling.
